Performing
Benjamin Britten : Piano Concerto (1938)
Programme also includes
Ralph Vaughan Williams : Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (1910)
Edward Elgar : Enigma Variations (1899-99)
On this all-British evening, Leif Ove Andsnes, our internationally
acclaimed piano star, performs Benjamin Britten’s virtuoso, melodic and easily accessible piano concerto, which was a great success when the 25-year-old composer premiered it in 1938. Tabita Berglund and KSO’s strings begin with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ beautiful and calm imagination on a theme by the Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis. After a break, we can enjoy Edward Elgar’s magnificent and multifaceted works of variation, built on his own theme and where a number of friends and colleagues are portrayed.

Richard Wagner (1813–1883) – Wesendock Lieder
Bergen International Festival Programme Note:
Throughout the corona period soprano Lise Davidsen and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes have harvested brilliant reviews for their concerts together, In January 2022 they are due to release their Grieg album – their first recording collaboration – centred on the Haugtussa song cycle.
The concert programme consists of excerpts from their Grieg album, from Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder and from the songs dedicated by Richard Strauss to his wife on the occasion of their marriage. With two musical greats joining forces to interpret Norwegian heritage and German lieder, there can be little doubt that the result will be anything other than exquisite.

Programme Note
Two exceptional pianists come together for this programme of works for piano duo. Of their recording of The Rite, Gramophone wrote: ‘Hamelin and Andsnes are irresistibly clear and energetic … For sheer articulacy, synchronised gymnastics, flawless balance, range of colour and flinty attack, or any other criterion you care to reach for, this is breathtaking pianism.’

The Rite of Spring
Bergen International Festival Programme Note:
Leif Ove Andsnes, Norway, and Marc-André Hamelin, Canada, have both won numerous prizes, performed on countless stages and received acclaim worldwide for their music. In duo format their unique talents combine in perfect balance.
Their collaboration started in 2017 when they toured internationally together with a programme featuring Stravinsky’s piano duet version of the Rite of Spring. The concerts were met with glowing reviews and resulted in a critically acclaimed album recording released in 2018. In Grieghallen, in addition to Rite of Spring, they perform works by John Adams, Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy.
It is a rare privilege to experience two major soloists performing together.
‘Many are scared of this and feel vulnerable; the touch of any two pianists is different, two instruments may vary enormously and the sensitivity of the strings is bound to differ. Just getting timing and rhythm together can be very challenging,’ commented Leif Ove Andsnes as the outset of the collaboration with Hamelin.
Now the Grieghallen audience can look forward to what the master pianists dared.

Det Norske Kammerorkester Programme Note:
In the series of Norwegian international soloists, we end the season with two jubilee days in the Aula, where we give you two different programs in two days.
Leif Ove Andsnes, with us, has always been a good match, and now we take up some of what we lost last March, when he was to play with us. Leif Ove loves Mozart, and on the program are his piano concerts no. 22 and 24, and in addition one of the concertos.
Together with Terje, we will also make up for some of what was lost from what should have been his final season with us, but which the pandemic put an end to. Now we give him elbow room with some of what he himself is most passionate about of the orchestra repertoire. And then we know that it will be both exciting and good!
