The US’ Star Ledger reviews The Beethoven Journey commenting “On his first Beethoven recording, Leif Ove Andsnes balances might and sensitivity. As a pianist whose main attraction has often been the latter, it is no surprise that the highlight of his work here is the middle movement of the Piano Concerto No. 3.

“Andsnes’ discipline and patience pay off in its pensive, monklike beginning. He delicately incorporates the composer’s flourishes into the melodic line. Under the soloist’s command, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra enters with a gush of warm, focused tone. As the mood shifts from bittersweet to nostalgic, Andsnes and the orchestra maintain tension and beauty. The third concerto also shows off his virtuosity in stunningly clear and rapid cascading passages, as well as tonal range from a gossamer whisper to pure steel.

“Andsnes’ Beethoven is not as aggressive as some may expect, but his vision is always clear and well articulated. He is well suited to the Piano Concerto No. 1, to which he and the streamlined, vibrant orchestra bring elegance, vigor and joy.”
