PROGRAMME
Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3
Programme also includes
Schubert: Symphony No. 9, C Major
PERFORMING WITH
Danish National Symphony Orchestra
Manfred Honeck, conductor
The world-famous Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes plays Rachmaninov’s music at the very highest level. His interpretations of Rachmaninov’s piano concertos are incomparable, not least the beloved Piano Concerto No. 3. “A gigantic work full of challenges for the pianist”, as Andsnes himself says.
Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 contains everything you want from a virtuoso piano concerto: beautiful melodies and equilibristic piano magic, linked together into a gripping and captivating structure that can make the roof of a concert hall lift!
The evening’s outstanding conductor, Manfred Honeck from Vienna, concludes the concert with Schubert’s great Symphony No. 9: a striving and ecstatic work that Honeck regards as the beginning of the entire Romantic musical tradition. In short, tonight’s concert consists of two highlights from classical music – played by some of the world’s best musicians.

Jean Sibelius: Symphony No 2
PERFORMING WITH

Thomas Søndergård conductor
Sibelius compared writing his daring Second Symphony to putting together a broken mosaic. For a listener, it’s only possible to marvel as stunning musical patterns shape themselves out of fragments.
In Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto, the piano makes an unexpected hero’s entrance with barely an introduction from the orchestra. But soon there’s a magnificent back and forth between soloist and ensemble, ending in a galloping finale.
Lotta Wennäkoski’s exquisite tone poem Of Footprints and Light quotes from an unfinished opera by the Finnish composer Ida Moberg, who studied with Sibelius.

Carl NielsenSymphony No. 5
PERFORMING WITH
Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; Edward Gardner, conductor
‘Arresting maturity, stylistic acumen and utter delight’ (The Daily Telegraph) combine in Leif Ove Andsnes’s performance of Beethoven’s last piano concerto, the Emperor. Following his multi-award-winning recording of the work, the Bergen-resident pianist returns to the Grieg Hall for this performance with Chief Conductor Edward Gardner.
Beethoven’s revolutionary musical tendencies had a huge influence on Carl Nielsen, the Danish composer who became intensely interested in the idea of a symphony as a struggle between good and evil along Beethovenian lines. Like Beethoven’s, Nielsen’s Fifth is his symphonic masterpiece – a work of startling originality and huge emotional power.
Edward Gardner continues his Nielsen cycle here after the Norwegian premiere of Identity Documents in C major – an exquisite, delicate canvas for orchestra by Swedish composer Rosali Grankull, a finalist in the Orchestra’s Pauline Hall Competition.

Norway’s celebrated piano giant set for much-anticipated return to Bærum Kulturhus with a rich programme featuring works by Schubert, Tveitt and Brahms.
Leif Ove Andsnes’ autumn 2021 concert in Sandvika goes down in history books as a sold-out tour de force for the internationally acclaimed pianist.
Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes ranks among the leading classical performers of our time. He is not only brilliant; there is something more, something different about him: he is free. He has transcended the artistic ideal of the immense effort that culminates in the breathtaking performance. Instead he breathes.

The last concert of the season offers nothing less than a French evening with our piano virtuoso Leif Ove Andsnes and a summery TSO.
In Debussy’s Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre, the piano soloist is well integrated into the orchestra’s texture, but the solo voice is both virtuoso, elegant and alluringly energetic. Andsnes has received rave reviews for his interpretation of this work worldwide.
Franck’s Variations symphoniques are considered his most brilliant work, requiring both dexterity and finesse. It is like a mini-version of a piano concerto, but here the soloist and orchestra are equal, and together they imaginatively develop the stream of musical ideas that is springing up.
The evening is framed by two orchestral works; excerpts from Mendelssohn’s enchantingly beautiful A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Wagner’s powerful and popular overture to the opera Tannhäuser.
