Klassiek-Centraal reviews Matthias Goerne and Leif Ove Andsnes’ Schubert cycle in Brussels
“For three Schubert recitals the phenomenal baritone Mathias Goerne and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes are guests at Bozar.
“Die schöne Müllerin is generally regarded as the least gloomy and depressing song cycle. But despite the here and there hopeful key, this set of songs – like Winterreise – is a hopeless wandering, ending in death. The beginning song Das Wandern is sometimes like a lusty step song interpreted as the start of the trip, but from the outset Matthias Goerne and Leif Ove Andsnes make no doubt about it that the journey ends fatally … and the interpretation was indeed filled with such emotional moments. Goerne can not sing without deep inner commitment, and that was both heard and felt in this recital … the unanimity with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes was touching, and now we eagerly looking forward to their live version of Winterreise and Schwanengesang!
