Copenhagen, Denmark – DR Symfoniorkestret Orkester – Beethoven
Leif Ove Andsnes, piano
DR Symfoniorkestret Orkester
Antonello Manacorda, conductor
PROGRAMME:
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3
PROGRAMME ALSO INCLUDES:
Beethoven: Coriolan-Overture
Beethoven: Symphony No. 5
VENUE NOTE:
The key of C minor represented something particularly dramatic in Beethoven’s work, and this evening the key runs like a stormy, red thread through the program. In Symphony No. 5, fate itself knocks on the door, and the whole work seethes with energy and intensity, before the darkness is finally overcome and it all ends in bright triumph.
In the overture to the tragedy Coriolan, it blows up to a full storm from the first note. The rebellious General Coriolan has joined forces with the enemy and now wants to invade Rome, while his mother pleads with him to lay down his arms. Beethoven pits the warlike and the praying against each other in a musical struggle of life and death
In the third piano concerto, too, things start gloomy and mysterious, and the great musical drama is triggered by the virtuoso solo voice. The Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes is particularly recognized for his Beethoven interpretations with precise articulation and an extraordinary musicality, which has been described as “poetic sensitivity” in The Guardian and “a deep musical understanding” in The New York Times.
After
the concert, you can linger in the foyer for a half-hour ‘Encore’, where you can get closer to the musicians in the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and experience them playing together in a more intimate setting. For ‘Extranummer’, the bar is open, the lights are dimmed and the musicians have put together the program themselves and talk about the music. ‘Encore’ takes place in the foyer of DR Koncerthuset and is included in the concert ticket.
