This month Leif Ove Andsnes guests on a new album released by the Swedish label BIS. Together with Martin Fröst (clarinet) and Antoine Tamestit (viola) they perform Mozart’s Kegelstatt trio which literally translates to “Skittles”. The name, given to the trio posthumously by the publishers seems to have no reference to the music but what is clear is that the trio was popular in Mozart’s own lifetime and helped increase the popularity of the clarinet which was a new instrument in the 18th century. The album was recently chosen by the Sunday Times as album of the week and the trio performance described as a “gem.”
