PERFORMING WITH
Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; Edward Gardner, conductor

‘Arresting maturity, stylistic acumen and utter delight’ (The Daily Telegraph) combine in Leif Ove Andsnes’s performance of Beethoven’s last piano concerto, the Emperor. Following his multi-award-winning recording of the work, the Bergen-resident pianist returns to the Grieg Hall for this performance with Chief Conductor Edward Gardner.

Beethoven’s revolutionary musical tendencies had a huge influence on Carl Nielsen, the Danish composer who became intensely interested in the idea of a symphony as a struggle between good and evil along Beethovenian lines. Like Beethoven’s, Nielsen’s Fifth is his symphonic masterpiece – a work of startling originality and huge emotional power.

Edward Gardner continues his Nielsen cycle here after the Norwegian premiere of Identity Documents in C major – an exquisite, delicate canvas for orchestra by Swedish composer Rosali Grankull, a finalist in the Orchestra’s Pauline Hall Competition.
